  37.      This medication should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  38. light-resistant container.
  39.  
  40. USES
  41.  
  42.      Flurazepam is prescribed to treat insomnia (including problems in falling
  43. asleep, waking during the night, and early morning wakefulness).  It is not
  44. clear exactly how this medicine works, but it may relieve insomnia by acting
  45. as a depressant of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).
  46.  
  47. TREATMENT
  48.  
  49.      Flurazepam should be taken ten to 15 minutes before bedtime.  It can be
  50. taken with food or a full glass of water if stomach upset occurs.  Do not take
  51. this medication with antacids, since they may slow its absorption from the
  52. gastrointestinal tract.
  53.      Your sleeping problem may improve the first night you take this
  54. medication, but it may take two or three nights before the effectiveness of
  55. flurazepam is noticed.
  56.  
  57. SIDE EFFECTS
  58.  
  59.      Minor.
  60.  
  61.      Bitter taste in the mouth, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness,
  62. daytime drowsiness, dry mouth, excessive salivation, fatigue, flushing,
  63. headache, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, sweating, or
  64. vomiting.  As your body adjusts to the medicine, these side effects should
  65. disappear.
  66.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  67. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise more,
  68. and drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  69.      Dry mouth can be relieved by chewing sugarless gum or by sucking on ice
  70. chips.
  71.      If you feel dizzy while taking this medication, sit or lie down for a
  72. while; get up slowly from a sitting or reclining position, and be careful on
  73. stairs.
  74.  
  75.      Major.
  76.  
  77.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  78. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  79. blurred or double vision, chest pain, fainting, falling, fever,
  80. hallucinations, joint pain, nightmares, palpitations, rash, severe depression,
  81. shortness of breath, slurred speech, sore throat, uncoordinated movements,
  82. unusual excitement, unusual tiredness, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  84. INTERACTIONS
  85.  
  86.      Flurazepam interacts with several other types of drugs:
  87.      1. To prevent oversedation, this drug should not be taken with alcohol,
  88. other sedative drugs, or central nervous system depressants (such as
  89. antihistamines, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, pain medicines, narcotics,
  90. drugs for seizures, phenothiazine tranquilizers) or with antidepressants.
  91.      2. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of levodopa and oral
  92. anticoagulants (blood thinners) and may increase the effects of phenytoin.
  93.      3. Disulfiram, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), isoniazid, and
  94. cimetidine can increase the blood levels of flurazepam, which can lead to
  95. increased side effects.
  96.      4. Concurrent use of rifampin or carbamazepine may decrease the
  97. effectiveness of flurazepam.
  98.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  99. taking, especially any listed above.
  100.  
  101. WARNINGS
  102.  
  103.      * Tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions you have had
  104. to any medications, especially to flurazepam or other benzodiazepine
  105. tranquilizers (such as alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, diazepam,
  106. halazepam, lorazepam, oxazepam, prazepam, temazepam, and triazolam).
  107.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had liver disease,
  108. kidney disease, epilepsy, lung disease, myasthenia gravis, porphyria, mental
  109. depression, or mental illness.
  110.      * Flurazepam can cause drowsiness.  Avoid tasks that require alertness,
  111. such as driving a car or using potentially dangerous equipment.
  112.      * This medication has the potential for abuse and must be used with
  113. caution.  Tolerance may develop quickly; do not increase the dosage of the
  114. drug without first consulting your doctor.  It is also important not to stop
  115. taking this drug suddenly if you have been taking it in large amounts or if
  116. you have used it for several weeks.  Your doctor may want to reduce the dosage
  117. gradually.
  118.      * This is a safe drug when used properly.  When it is combined with other
  119. sedative drugs or with alcohol, however, serious side effects may develop.
  120.      * The elderly may be at increased risk for side effects, especially
  121. daytime drowsiness or confusion.  Report any changes in mental status to your
  122. doctor immediately.
  123.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  This type of medicine
  124. has been shown to increase the chance of birth defects if it is taken during
  125. the first three months of pregnancy.  In addition, too much use of this
  126. medicine during the last six months of pregnancy may result in addiction of
  127. the fetus--leading to withdrawal side effects at birth.  Also, use of this
  128. medicine during the last weeks of pregnancy may cause excessive drowsiness,
  129. slowed heartbeat, and breathing difficulties in the newborn.  It is very
  130. important to tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  This
  131. medicine can pass into breast milk and cause excessive drowsiness, slowed
  132. heartbeat, and breathing difficulties in nursing infants.
